South Korea is a member of the G12 group of countries and is classified as a modern, developed, high-income country. It has the fourth largest economy in Asia and the eleventh largest globally. The country has a well-educated, highly-skilled workforce in a population of 51.4 million (2017), with a GDP growth of 2.7%.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s main industries are electronics, telecommunications, automobile production, chemicals, shipbuilding and steel production. New important emerging manufacturing sectors in the economy include defense, aerospace, EV vehicles and renewable energy.<\/p>\n

The country has major base metal refineries located at Onsan and Seokpo to support its manufacturing base, but imports most of its raw materials. South Korea is the largest global refiner and exporter of zinc.<\/p>\n

South Korea imports >US$40 billion of base metal concentrates annually and refines them to produce metals, powders and chemicals, using most and exporting the rest. South Korea is the world\u2019s 3rd largest importer of copper ores and concentrates. It has the 6th largest copper smelting capacity and operates the largest lead smelter. There are more than 14 specialist metal refineries and metals recycling plants operating in South Korea, smelting silver, bismuth, tungsten, antimony, manganese, molybdenum, cobalt and gold.<\/p>\n
South Korea is strategically located in the North Asia regional market.
